Empowering Women in Construction: Kelly Bacon’s Inspiring Path and Her Vision for Innovation

From Midjourney to Copilot, Gemini and more, the use of AI tools is on the rise.  Despite the fact that Generative AI is actually not a new concept, for a lot of users, it was the 2023 launch of ChatGPT, with its user-friendly and conversational design, that truly propelled the technology into the mainstream. Since then, Artificial Intelligence has rapidly transformed how individuals and organizations operate. In October 2025 alone, 22.5 million people used AI tools, with work-related tasks accounting for 44% of AI usage in August 2025. These figures highlight the growing reliance on AI technologies across professional environments.

Behind the scenes, what is enabling us to chat with an AI 24/7? We speak with Kelly Bacon, Vice President & Data Center Market Lead of AECOM, to find out more about technology, the Data Centers powering AI use, and her career journey.

Kelly Bacon, Vice President & Data Center Market Lead - AECOM

Kelly is a Market Sector Leader in the Data Center Practice in the Buildings + Places group at AECOM. Her degrees in business, sociology, and predictive analytics enable her to provide a societal context for the changing landscape of our built environments. As a Market Sector Leader, Kelly operates at the intersection of all the many components – both technical and financial – of the fastest growing building typology of today. With more than 20 years of experience across building typologies and sectors, Kelly offers a unique perspective into the complexities of this fast-growing sector.

     1.    How did you begin your journey at AECOM?

"I joined AECOM 11 years ago following the strategic acquisition of a boutique, global design consulting firm. As lead of the Americas team, I integrated those assets into the wider AECOM enterprise. The client base spanned all industry sectors, so it was an amazing opportunity to identify continuity across all of AECOM’s business lines and disciplines. This experience allowed me to explore many parts of the business and gain exposure to a variety of space typologies and market sectors, which ultimately equipped me to take on various practice and account leadership roles at AECOM."

     2.    Where do you see the AEC industry at in terms of adopting emerging technologies?

"A few years ago, McKinsey’s Global Institute completed a study comparing industries in terms of digital adoption – and the AEC industry ranked at the bottom. There are multiple reasons for this, including the sheer volume of software used across multiple disciplines; the number of different companies (large and small) often involved in projects; and the cost structure of the industry itself. At the time, I found that statistic disappointing; but I also chose to view it as an opportunity – nowhere to go but up. We’ve now moved into a technological adolescence – the technology is maturing, the demand for innovation can no longer be ignored – and our industry is pulling together all the disparate parts to truly innovate at all stages of the design and construction process. It’s an exciting time of disruption and change, and one we have to work together, collectively, to achieve."

     3.    In your opinion, what is the biggest strategic consideration for the growth of data centers?

"Power. And/or lack thereof. We have an aging grid in the Americas and, currently, there is simply not enough power to support the extreme growth we are seeing in the sector. There are some truly innovative “behind the meter” solutions being developed to meet the demand. We need to explore supplemental power solutions at the onset – nuclear, renewables such as wind and solar, additional Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS) – and substations need to be considered alongside the design criteria. Another strategic consideration is community engagement. There is a growing backlash against this rapid growth. As we introduce more innovative solutions, like waste heat recapture and renewable energy sources, we can actually give back to these communities. While demand grows during this AI boom, so too will the innovation needed to build data centers without over-taxing our existing infrastructure."

     4.    You’ve cycled through various leadership roles throughout your career. Can you share a few words of encouragement to the future generation who wants to succeed in this industry?

"Our industry is vast and complex, with so many specialties, entities, and building typologies. This creates extensive opportunities for those who want to evolve within it. My father once told me, 'Luck is when opportunity meets preparation.' So prepare yourself – stay on top of industry trends and emerging markets, and research where innovation is happening. Develop a subject matter expertise while also expanding your knowledge to the point where you can be ready to pivot when opportunity arises. I wish I had learned earlier in my career that mentorship doesn’t always have to be formal or structured. If you see someone’s career that you admire – approach them! They will often be willing to share their various journeys with you."
