John Neary - HOK

John leads the Facades group at HOK in New York, working with the firm’s offices around the country. Recent projects include the LaGuardia airport Terminal B replacement and the Rutgers Cancer Center of New Jersey in the NY area, along with various project types in other cities that include both bespoke facades and standard cladding systems. The HOK Facades group has conducted a number of research-based efforts in the past few years including the Circadian Curtain Wall project for the Ornamental Metals Institute Design Challenge in 2018, which has been published in journals in the US, Canada and Italy; a project with Arup Fire Engineering on code compliance of mass timber curtain wall in high-rise buildings; and the Structural Terra Cotta Mullion with Gartner/Permasteelisa, TriPyramid Structures and Boston Valley Terra Cotta in the 2021 Architectural Ceramics Assembly Workshop, an invitational program run by Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture and Boston Valley. The Terra Cotta Mullion received the inaugural Vitruvian Award for Outstanding Collaborative Project from the Façade Tectonics Institute in 2022. John has previously been a Design Director at Gensler, Houston; a Project Designer at Perkins Eastman, Stamford and New York; and an Associate Partner and Project Designer at Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. He co-teaches a design studio on facades as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the New York City College of Technology and has taught previously at NJIT, Kansas State and Washington State. He is on the Special Advisory Committee and the Research Committee of the Façade Tectonics Institute.
