Paint Hall contains 4 x 16,000ft² “cells”, set out in a square connected by an internal road and streets. Each cell measures 90ft high and has one 3-foot thick external “wall” that is actually a 75ft high door (there are a total of eight colossal doors in the structure).

While the studio’s double-skinned cell construction combats general noise pollution on the set, all the building’s eight doors were found to be leaking sound and needed a solution to keep the outdoor ambient noise from the nearby construction, heavy road traffic, and loud overhead aircraft from infiltrating the massive structure.

Set on eight acres and a combined set area of 106,000 sq. ft, Titanic Studios was the main film studio and post-production facility for all eight episodes of Game of Thrones, the most successful television show ever produced. In addition, the highly anticipated prequel to Game of Thrones, “Bloodstone” went into production at the studio in summer 2019.

The facility, the largest in Europe, was able to attract world-class productions like Game of Thornes in part because of the excellent acoustics inside Paint Hall’s colossal structure.

Paint Hall Studio, where most of the interior set filming takes place for the productions was originally part of the Harland and Wolf Shipyard where huge component parts of ships including the Titanic were painted in climate-controlled conditions.

Adding additional pressure, the sound problems needed to be fixed before filming could even begin on a joint Universal Pictures/Northern Ireland production and the results had to be effective enough to satisfy the very sensitive microphones used in filmmaking, which easily pick up very minute background sounds that can ruin the soundtrack.

Acoustical Consultants from Acoustiblok UK Ltd quickly conducted a site visit and compiled a comprehensive report identifying the building’s acoustical weaknesses and vulnerabilities, as well as a workable solution to meet the producers’ schedule. After agreeing to the proposal, work immediately began on the studio’s sound attenuation project:

First, the vast cavities within each door were filled with an open cell fiber. Then, Acoustiblok® (Blok16®) membrane was attached to steel supports within the doors and secured with resilient channels. The steel structure was also treated with Thermablok® aerogel insulation material to increase acoustical dampening and to address sound transmission loss properties. Lastly, new corrugated facing panels were installed as an external finish to complete the project.

Brian Martin, a technician with Muldiss Darton Productions of the UK, said, “This new project represents the biggest film yet for the Paint Hall studios, and we needed the absolute best sound attenuation material that could be installed in a very short period of time,”

Martin continued. “It’s crucial that we have perfect sound conditions for filming and recording. The microphones used are highly sensitive and can pick up every single sound in the background.

He concluded, “The Acoustiblok crew responded quickly to our deadlines, and their sound isolation material worked exceptionally well, especially considering the large scale of this facility.”

Ultimately, the installation of Acoustiblok’s sound abatement products at Paint Hall Studios helped make it a sought-after venue for big budget productions to come such as Game of Thrones.

And because of Acoustiblok’s excellent reputation in the industry, the UK’s Pinewood and Leavesden studios also treated their studios with Acoustiblok membrane, setting the stage for major blockbusters including Harry Potter, Star Wars, and new James Bond movies.
