Major Delaware Memorial Bridge preservation works get under way

Construction work has begun on a major infrastructure preservation programme at the Delaware Memorial Bridge, with crews preparing to replace 46 structural joints on the New Jersey-bound span.

The Delaware River and Bay Authority's contractor, UHPC Solutions North America LLC, will remove and replace 24 expansion joints and 22 relief joints, alongside reconstruction of the adjoining bridge deck using Ultra High-Performance Concrete.

Work starts on 7 September and is scheduled to continue until 24 November. The two right-hand lanes of the New Jersey-bound span will be closed continuously once the traffic arrangement is established, while the two left lanes remain open.

To maintain capacity, crews will create a barrier-separated contraflow lane on the Delaware-bound bridge for passenger vehicles heading towards the New Jersey Turnpike or US Route 40. Commercial vehicles will remain on the main New Jersey-bound carriageway.

The twin-span suspension bridge carries around 100,000 vehicles each day, making traffic management a significant part of the construction challenge. Initial night works between 8 and 12 September will establish the bypass arrangement before the main work shifts onto the northbound structure.

The bridge authority says replacement of the original joint systems, together with earlier deck preservation work, is intended to support the structure's long-term integrity and performance. No overall contract value for this specific phase was stated in the current project information reviewed, so no cost figure has been attributed to the works.

For contractors and engineers, the programme is a useful case study in carrying out structural rehabilitation on a heavily trafficked regional crossing while maintaining operations throughout construction. That is editorial analysis based on the confirmed scope and traffic-management strategy.
