Steven Holl Architects’ library and park to bridge the generation gap in New York City

The Hunters Point Library is located on Long Island City’s East River waterfront, and according to SHA, it only occupies a small part of the site, maximising the outside space for the local community.
The library’s concrete facade is exposed and aluminium painted and the inside is clad in bamboo. Natural light will stream in through large glazed cuts in the facade, offering views of the river and city.
The building contains a children’s area, a teen area and an adult area, one facade opening for each. A reading garden is based outside the library’s east entrance and another is placed on top of the structure.
Steven Holl said: “It is an honour to imagine and realise this community library, a free open public building where people can interact across generations. We hope it is a gift to this great city and its future children.”
