The 2025 Top Mental Health Care Providers

The 2025 Top Mental Health Care Providers
Medical and nonprofit organizations meeting New Yorkers’ mental health needs.

Mental health has always been critical to an individual’s well-being, though it hasn’t always received the attention it deserves. In recent decades, there have been signs that the stigma surrounding mental illness is declining. At the same time, many measures of mental illness are increasing, pointing to the need for further investment in high-quality care.

New York is among the nation’s leaders in ensuring that there are enough effective treatment options available. The state recently ranked first in Mental Health America’s “State of Mental Health in America” report, which according to Gov. Kathy Hochul demonstrates “that we remain on the right track in our concerted efforts to address the mental health crisis among children and adults.”

City & State’s inaugural Top Mental Health Care Providers features dozens of the elite mental health providers in New York. The list, which includes large and small providers from across the state, puts a spotlight on the innovative programs and standout services being offered to ensure that New Yorkers are able to thrive and successfully face challenges to their mental health.

1. Acacia Network

Overview: Acacia Network is one of the leading human services organizations in New York City, providing integrated, culturally competent and trauma-informed programs in the areas of health, housing, social services, economic development and cultural revitalization. Headquartered in the Bronx, our network comprises 100-plus affiliates and related entities that serve more than 150,000 individuals annually across four boroughs in New York City, Buffalo, Albany, Dunkirk, Rochester and Syracuse in the Upstate/Western New York region, as well as Maryland, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas and Puerto Rico.

Standout services: Acacia Network stands apart as a comprehensive, community-rooted provider serving over 150,000 individuals each year through integrated, culturally competent and trauma-informed care. Our whole-person approach allows every client to be seamlessly connected to the clinical, social, educational or supportive services they need. Because we are deeply embedded in vulnerable communities, we recognize the impact of past and ongoing trauma and design all services through a trauma-informed lens to ensure safety, respect and empowerment. This unique combination of integration, cultural humility and trauma-informed practice positions Acacia Network as a leader in delivering transformative, community-driven solutions.

2. Argus Community

Overview: Argus Community has been a cornerstone of evidence-based behavioral health and social services in New York for nearly six decades. Argus provides comprehensive residential and outpatient mental health, substance use, housing, vocational and supportive services to individuals and families across the five boroughs as well as Long Island. Our mission is to empower people to achieve stability, recovery and self-sufficiency through compassionate, person-centered care. With a multidisciplinary team and a network of integrated programs, Argus continues to lead in promoting health equity and community wellness across New York.

Standout services: What sets Argus Community apart is our deep connection to the communities we serve. Many of our staff have lived experience and share the cultural and social backgrounds of our clients, allowing us to deliver care with genuine empathy and respect. Argus provides fully integrated mental health and substance use services that are evidence-based, person-centered and accessible to all. No one is ever turned away. Our innovative, award-winning, holistic approach promotes recovery, resilience and long-term stability for individuals and families across New York.

3. BestSelf Behavioral Health

Overview: BestSelf Behavioral Health is the largest community-based behavioral health organization serving Western New York. It offers comprehensive services for mental health and substance use disorders. The organization serves over 40,000 individuals annually across more than 70 locations, focusing on trauma-informed care and person-centered treatment. BestSelf empowers everyone to be their best self.

Standout services: No matter your age, location in Western New York, or the challenges you face, BestSelf provides innovative, evidence-based care with compassion so you feel respected and hopeful. With multiple locations, we offer comprehensive mental health and substance use treatment, including Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics integrating behavioral and physical health. Our community-based services include education and vocational supports, mobile and school programs, homeless outreach and housing, and the BestResponse Intensive Crisis Stabilization Center for 24/7 immediate crisis care. The Scott Bieler Child Advocacy Center at BestSelf offers trauma-informed care for children and families affected by sexual abuse.

4. Center for Urban Community Service

Overview: CUCS helps people rise from poverty, exit homelessness and be healthy. We provide housing, mental health, primary care and wraparound support to 50,000 New Yorkers each year. Through our health care affiliate, Janian Medical Care, CUCS delivers integrated psychiatry, primary care and street medicine for people who have experienced homelessness or live with mental illness. At the heart of this work is a belief that recovery begins with trust and that the relationship is the treatment. In addition to operating at 86 sites citywide, Janian is dedicated to training the future generation of health care professionals to provide compassionate, person-centered care.

Standout services: Janian stands out by uniquely delivering psychiatric care across the full continuum of homelessness and housing in New York City. Our experienced and dedicated psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners operate outside traditional clinic settings, embedding care where people experiencing or recovering from homelessness live and receive services. This model ensures truly person-centered treatment that meets patients where they are, fostering trust and continuity even in the most challenging circumstances. Since its founding in 2007, Janian has grown from 4,000 to more than 38,000 patient encounters annually, reflecting both the reach and impact of this integrated, relationship-based approach to care.

5. Greater Mental Health of New York

Overview: For nearly 80 years, Greater Mental Health of New York has promoted the mental and emotional well-being of individuals throughout Westchester and Rockland counties and beyond. Our wide array of behavioral health and substance use treatment services support people of all ages as they navigate their unique recovery journey. Through our robust direct care services, as well as our advocacy efforts and community education opportunities, Greater Mental Health is able to provide support to thousands of individuals and families in the Lower Hudson Valley each year, helping to build healthier, safer and more connected communities.

Standout services: What differentiates Greater Mental Health is our focus on mobile, community-based services. Over half of our services are delivered in homes, schools and places like libraries and community centers, reducing barriers to care, such as a lack of transportation or child care. Our mobile teams work with children, youth, families and adults, meeting them where they are – physically and emotionally. This approach fosters trust, provides deeper insight into client needs and enables rapid crisis response. Our mobile approach helps us get our neighbors what they need – from short-term engagements to serving those with the highest level of needs.
