The Evolution of BIM and What to Expect Next
Building Information Modeling (BIM) started on the simple premise that if buildings are three dimensional, that the models used to create them should be 3D as well. The original generations of BIM were used for predicting aspects of the design and construction process. As Building Information Modeling evolved, information or the data being used became far more important.
As it went into the next generation of Building Information Modeling, new breeds of software like Autodesk, Tecla and many others, drastically increased the capabilities that BIM designers have. As we move forward, the data has become almost if not more important than the models themselves. We will discuss the tools, how modeling and the computer infrastructures that are needed to support it have evolved and where that is going in the future.
