After completing undergraduate studies at Carnegie Mellon and working for different firms, Colin went in search of a more human-centered design approach. This led him to graduate school at Yale, where he created a curriculum for himself that investigated how people use and are affected by the spaces that surround them every day. From there, he went on to a leadership role at Pompei A.D. – one of the few firms at the time to actively investigate the idea of experiential design.
Colin met his co-founder Caleb, working in Aspen, Colorado in the mid-1990s. They founded Mapos Architects in 2008 on the premise that great design can be sustainable, humane, and culturally relevant. Mapos gained recognition for its client-specific design solutions and dedication to an integrative design process. The firm’s portfolio is notable both for its focus on design and for its broad diversity of project types: retail concepts, restaurants, hotels, residences, spas, creative workspaces, branding, exhibition design, community spaces, and product design, among many others. Mapos has worked with private clients, community groups, start-ups, and well-known brands including the Craft Restaurant Group, Clinique, Coca-Cola, Nike, Fila, Asics, The Related Companies, Viacom/MTV, iStar Financial, and Samsung.
