Joel Ahearne-Ray is the Senior Materials Specialist with the Turner Engineering Group at Turner Construction Company, based in New York City. A materials engineer by training with many years of experience in manufacturing, he brings a practical, production-conscious lens to sustainable material selection that connects design intent, supply chain constraints, and jobsite execution. Joel supports project teams, designers, and owners in incorporating lower carbon and healthier materials into specifications and procurement decisions, with a focus on embodied carbon reduction, material health, and next generation products and systems. He leads Turner’s Low Carbon Materials Committee and regularly advises on low carbon concrete, steel, insulation, aluminum, and emerging alternatives, translating EPDs and technical data into clear, actionable project decisions.
