Martin Hopp
Martin Hopp is the founder and principal of Martin Hopp Architect (MHA), a New York–based architecture practice focused on high-performance educational buildings and the advancement of mass timber construction. Founded in 2013, the firm works at the intersection of architecture, sustainability, and public purpose, with a particular emphasis on K–12 schools and healthy learning environments.
MHA’s Evergreen Charter School in Hempstead, New York—an 89,000 SF hybrid mass timber K–12 school—has become a widely recognized example of next-generation school design. The project received the 2022 U.S. Mass Timber Competition: Building to Net-Zero Carbon and demonstrates how low-carbon construction, daylighting, natural materials, and high indoor environmental quality can support student performance and well-being while remaining cost-competitive with conventional construction.
Through projects like Evergreen and ongoing research initiatives, Martin’s work explores how architecture can connect sustainable forestry, advanced prefabrication, and high-performance design to create healthier buildings and stronger communities.
Before founding MHA, Martin was a Project Director at Rafael Viñoly Architects in New York and previously worked in architectural practices in London and Stuttgart.
