Construction Rises On Hotel Conversion At 224 West 47th Street In Times Square, Manhattan

Construction is progressing on 224 West 47th Street, a 25-story hotel tower at the northern end of Times Square, Manhattan. Designed by Gene Kaufman Architect and developed by McSam Hotel Group, the project involves the conversion and expansion of an 11-story bank building from the 1920s into a 136-room Cambria Suites hotel. GK West 47th LLC is listed as the owner and Omnibuild is the general contractor for the Midtown property, which is located on a narrow interior lot between the pedestrianized plazas along Broadway to the east and Eighth Avenue to the west.

Recent photographs show the original building covered in scaffolding and black netting as the reinforced concrete expansion rises above its roof parapet. Crews are nearing the halfway mark on the addition, and could potentially reach the parapet by early spring.

The rendering in the main photo previews the restored look of the original structure’s brick cladding and grid of windows with dark mullions. The masonry envelope on the flat eastern wall extends vertically to the addition, which features a façade of reflective metal paneling and square windows with earth-toned frames. The upper floors incorporate multiple setbacks lined with glass railings and a cantilevering volume topped with a protruding cornice. The expansion culminates in a mechanical bulkhead wrapped in ventilation grilles.

The nearest subways from the property are the N, R, and W trains at the 49th Street station.

YIMBY anticipates 224 West 47th Street will complete construction sometime near the end of this year.
