NYC Council Kick Off Search For Architect To Redesign Park Avenue Malls

NYC Council Kick Off Search For Architect To Redesign Park Avenue Malls

Keith Powers announced that the city plans to issue an RFP (request for proposals) for landscape architects to redesign Park Avenue, between East 46th and 57th Streets.

This plan will call for the demolition of the existing Park Avenue Malls. According to Councilmember Keith Powers, these will be replaced with "new, world-class, active open space".

Park Avenue used to feature plant-covered pedestrian malls that were over 40 feet wide. However, in 1927 these were removed to make way for traffic and the space has been dominated by vehicles ever since then. However, with these new plans, the space could once again become pedestrianized.

The chosen architect would be contracted by the New York City Department of Transportation and funded by the East Midtown Public Realm Improvement Fund Governing Group to create a master plan for the area.

The issue of the request for proposals will also include opportunities for local residents to have input.  The team will be selected by the end of this summer, with a final plan in place for construction to begin in summer 2023.

Councilmember Powers stated that: “With this news, we’re taking a major step forward in creating more open, accessible public space for people and businesses in the bustling area of East Midtown

“The pandemic has already accelerated a movement towards a more pedestrian-friendly experience across the city, and this project is a great example of how shifting priorities can help shape a more enjoyable streetscape.”
