New USGBC Resource Explores Commercial-to-Residential Conversions Trend

USGBC has published an anthology of existing research reports, industry insights, news articles, and state and local policies surrounding the topic of commercial-to-residential conversions. Conversion projects repurpose existing commercial buildings—often but not exclusively offices—into multifamily residential buildings.

The conversions trend has recently been growing in the news, in research and in policy. In fact, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently released a notice of funding opportunity to study office-to-residential conversions.

Across the country, cities and developers are turning to conversions as a potential solution to revitalize downtown business districts following the COVID-19 pandemic, which heavily impacted commercial real estate occupancy. Where feasible, repurposing existing buildings presents an opportunity to create healthy, high-performing multifamily housing and can have a positive environmental outcome by avoiding the resources consumed in new construction.
